Mactan Cebu International Airport (2018 Update)
THE CLOCK IS TICKING and in three months time, Cebu’s connection to the world will never be the same again.
As the gates of the Terminal 2 of Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) opens by June 2018, Cebu will become the country’s new aviation hub, connecting the islands to many points across the globe.
Early this month, local and airport officials as well as stakeholders in the tourism of Terminal 2, operated under the public-private-partnership (PPP) scheme through the GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp.
Bangalore-based GMR Infrastructure Ltd. and its Philippine partner Megawide Construction Corp., won in 2014 the PPP contract to build, operate and maintain the new MCIA which project cost is now at P17.52 billion.
Mactan Cebu International Airport envisions to become the world’s friendliest airport gateway that demonstrates the warmth and hospitality of the Cebuano people.
Its resort-feel ambiance will surely be felt the moment passengers set foot on Mactan Island. Terminal 2’s architectural design is inspired by Cebu’s island heritage and rich culture.
GMCAC tapped the design icon Budji Layug, architect Royal Pineda and Cebu’s owned world renowned designer Kenneth Cobonpue to realize the resort-feel ambiance of the Terminal 2 which spans 65,500 square meters.
Terminal 2 will serve international flights with eight aerobridges. It will also be connected to Terminal 1.
“We create the first and last impressions visitors make of Cebu and the rest of the country and thus we want to create a worthy impression for everyone. Not only will the new terminal look distinctly Filipino, it will also be a complete experience of Filipino hospitality the moment you set foot here,” said GMCAC president Louie Ferrer.
It wave-shaped, barrel-roofed structure is created from arched beams made of glulam woods, which were imported from Austria. The arched roof structure is said to unveil the beauty of the ocean, enriching the terminal’s interiors as a resort-inspired gateway.
Floors at Terminal 2 are, likewise, embedded with mother of pearls, showing off Cebu’s charm and strength being surrounded by pristine beaches and dive sites.
